Big offseason for Capitals
One of the Caps big aquisitions, Loui Erkisson, scoring on Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller
This offseason has been a huge one for the Washington Capitals, with 3 huge trades, as well as 4 free-agent signings that has helped to bolster the roster and leaves the Caps among Cup favorites going into the season.
It started with a massive 7 player trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, the Caps traded top line Nicklas backstrom, as well as Mike Riberio, young defenseman Dmitry Orlov, and top prospects Tom Wilson and Evgeni Kuznetsov and a 2nd round pick, in exchange for allstar center Claude Giroux, top prospect center Sean Couturier and a 1st round selection. This trade redefined the center role in Washington for years to come with Giroux and Couturier expected to flank the top 2 lines.
The Caps shook up the hockey world for a 2nd time in less than a week with another 7 player trade that saw the end of Alexander Ovechkins' time with the Washington Capitals, along him went Brooks Laich, Joey Crabb and a 1st round pick, to Boston, in exchange for Tyler Seguin, David Krejci, Brad Marchand and Daniel Paille. This trade combined with the previous one has completely redefined the entirtey of the Washington Capitals offense, and leaves Claude Giroux as the unquestioned new face of the franchise.
A few days later, the Caps made a relativly smaller deal with the Dallas Stars, only involving 5 playesr and 1 pick, the Caps added another huge piece to the top 6 by bringing in Loui Eriksson, as well as Jamie Oleksiak from Dallas, in exchange for the recently aquired Brad Marchand, young up and coming center Marcus Johansson, and prospect defenseman Jaynen Rissling, as well as the 1st round pick aquired from Philadelphia. This trade gives Loui Eriksson who will step right onto the top line with Giroux and Tyler Seguin, as well as a young future top 4 defenseman in Jamie Oleksiak.
Free agency was also a frenzy for the capitals, they signed offensive winger Kristian Huselius, as well as 2-way veteran wingers Andrew Brunette and Mike Knuble, and center Daymond Langkow. These players are expected to play supporting roles on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines for the Caps.
One thing that is worth noting about this offseason, all of the work has been done on the forward core, the top 6 defenseman and the Goalie duo remain the same as to before the offseason, time will tell if the offensive moves were enough or if it was a mistake to not address the defense.
Offseason recap:
Out: Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Brooks Laich, Joey Crabb, Tom Wilson, Evgeni Kuznetsov, Jaynen Rissling, Marcus Johanssen, Dmitry Orlov, Mike Riberio, WSH 1st, WSH 2nd
