Summer of Change
Despite winning the 2013 Stanley Cup, the Chicago Blackhawks have kicked off the offseason with two major trades. The first trade saw the Blackhawks trade star defenseman Duncan Keith, Daniel Carcillo and Steve Mason to the New York Islanders for Andrew MacDonald, Ryan Strome and Anders Nilsson. The move is expected to free up some much needed cap space.
“Its not easy to move someone who has been so good for us. Duncan brings a lot to a team both on and off the ice. But we feel that if we want to keep the team as deep as it is, we need to look for ways to save salary and reload on talent. Andrew is a solid defenseman in his own right, and will fit in with some of our other players quite well. Were also very high on Ryan Strome; at such a young age he has already developed a two way game. Were looking forward to see what he can do.”
The former Blackhawk captain quickly addressed the media this morning:
"Its a shocker, but its part of the game. I've had a great time in Chicago and I want to thank the fans for their support. Any time that you win two Cups, its hard to find negatives, but now its time to move on and focus on how I can help the New York Islanders."
Chicago also traded Patrick Kane and Anton Volchenkov to the New York Rangers for Michael Del Zotto and Calgary’s 2014 2nd Round Pick.
“Were very excited to bring in a young dynamic, and reining Norris Trophy Winner defenseman. Patrick and Anton were great players for us this year, but we felt that this trade makes a lot of sense given the depth that we have. Michael can do it all, and should be able to play in any situation.”
With the moves the Chicago Blackhawks are now approximately 4 million under the salary cap, something the Chicago GM said was a goal going into the offseason.

Good Riddance.
